cooper was born castimir kovacic in dubrovnik, at least that's what it said on the paper tucked into the blanket he was wrapped in when he was left on the doorstep of a church one summer evening. he was cared for by the church for two years before a couple from rural illinois adopted him when he was two years old. the couple, marcia and jacob kelson, were unable to have children of their own and when they heard about the opportunity to bring the toddler into their family, they jumped at the chance.
he was raised on their farm where they had a massive garden but also fields of corn and hay. growing up, cooper knew he was different and he was treated differently by his peers, but he was well loved and cared for at home. he was painfully shy and that made it easier for his peers to prey on and bully him. he knew that there were problems at home when his parents could be heard whispering together after he was supposed to be in bed. they tried not to worry him with their concerns, but they were losing money on their farm and then, after a bad year, they finally had to come to terms with the fact that their farming days were over.
just before coop turned 14, they moved to boston to be with family until they could get on their feet. cooper was grateful for a fresh start and the opportunity to make new friends, but he hadn't grown any bolder. he was still a shy young man and was still prone to attacks and teasing from his peers. what he did gain, though, was a friend in the form of his cousin rian, seven years younger than him, but a trusted confidant and playmate.
it wasn't until his sophomore year in high school that his friend status turned around. although sloan was younger than him by a year, the two got along swimmingly after meeting in a theater elective class. cooper was too shy to perform in front of an audience, but he was happy enough to put sets together behind the scenes. eventually, he joined the newspaper and found that he loved writing.
when he graduated from high school, he decided to pursue journalism at boston university. when sloan graduated and attended there, as well, they became roommates and further cemented their friendship. cooper graduated with honors but couldn't seem to find a job anywhere but at a women's magazine called cat. he started at the bottom and has slowly worked his way up to assistant editor. although his eye often wanders to other publications, he is happy where he is for the moment.

Superman is the most powerful being on planet Earth, an alien immigrant named Kal-El from the planet Krypton who was raised in Smallville, Kansas, to become an American superhero. Raised with high moral ideals, he uses his incredible strength, speed, flight and various other superpowers to fight evil and protect the innocent. In his civilian identity he is Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter working for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. He is a founding member of the Justice League of America and a charter member of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 30th Century. (source)
